FAQ
Just because there are no smokestacks on a movie set does not mean that filmmaking is a green industry. The production business requires a tremendous amount of energy and resources, and we’d like to clear the air about some common green filmmaking facts.
GPR is dedicated to lessening the resource consumption of a movie set by helping institute: green power generation sources, introducing bio-compostable food and beverage utensils and service ware, on-set recycling and composting systems. If you have additional questions, contact us!
Clearing the Air About Green Film and Events
Q: Ok, so, we’ve collected our compost. Now what?
A: You’re very likely to find a nearby farm that will love your food waste. In Santa Fe we are lucky to partner with some awesome partners who are experts in renewing movie compost. Some turn it into compost for use as a soil enhancer or natural fertizer, while others with farm animals like pigs will let their animals feast! Nothing goes to waste. Check out our composting partners on our services page.
Q: How do bio-compostable utensils work? Do we have to do anything special with them?
A: Not at all. When the compostable items are hauled from set, they are chipped and sorted into piles that are watered and turned, overtime creating soil.
Q: Aren’t art departments notorious for producing a lot of waste, and using lots of nasty chemicals and solvents?
A: While its true that the art departments of the past have been anything but green, there are a lot of changes that have taken place over the years to reduce the level of toxicity of many of the products used on a set. It’s probably been more of an immediate health concern for crew than one for the environment, but we’re glad to see the changes nonetheless. Other areas of the Art Department that can be greened are:
Set Dec: Donate items after the sale to non profit second hand stores. In Santa Fe we like the ReStore Thrift Store that funds Habitat for Humanity. Re-purpose unconventional set pieces and props to local artists.
Recycle Set Waste: Construction can donate flats for reuse and have us haul their waste wood to various facilities that use the material for feed stock for energy production or compost piles.
Q: Isn’t it more expensive to make a film with a green production charter?
A: No. We believe in keeping prices competitive with the conventional option. We try to keep bio-diesel prices competitive with the cost of diesel and the recycling costs well within the cost of a dumpster. We know every film is on a budget and we work really hard to make the right choice attainable for every production.
